Gifts nobody wants...

Right up there with fruitcake.

The Communist Manifesto? What kind of progressive nut job gives that as a gift? And why is that an editor's pick for The Guardian? Yeah, those are rhetorical questions. All the progressive hive think alike.

Should I start giving out Solzhenitsyn? If you read the one, you should certainly read the other ...

“Untouched by the breath of God, unrestricted by human conscience, both capitalism and socialism are repulsive.”

Guess who said that?

Solzhenitsyn said it.

Solzhenitsyn said it. Solzhenitsyn grew up in the cr@ppy Soviet Union. Maybe if he had an iPhone he'd have been a happy camper.

Personally, I'm not a "capitalist". I am a proponent of the free market. I'm amazed at people who don't understand the difference.

“One should never direct people towards happiness, because happiness too is an idol of the market-place. One should direct them towards mutual affection.”

... That's why I pray for Jasper.

Our capitalist free market

Our capitalist free market isn't a perfect system.

But it's far better than any alternative system.

Capitalism, by definition,

Capitalism, by definition, favors those with capital. As a result, capitalists are inclined to use their resources to create barriers to participation in the markets. It's why you can't find a bank that won't scr@w you.

I think national protectionism is a general exception to a free market when some markets are constrained in unequal ways.

This is one of the definitions of Capitalism:
Definition of capitalism. : an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market.

This is absolutely the best system ever developed. It depends on "private" control of all things. Any time a government gets involved, it's jell-covered claws of totalitarianism start to form. Government automatons simply cannot help themselves.

Well let's be clear. It's not

Well let's be clear. It's not capitalism, per se, that is great, it's *competition* that's great. Capitalism, when markets are functional, provides the the best competition.

Capitalistic free markets can become non-competitive, if there is a local monopoly, or a cartel, for example.

In those cases, prices can be poorly set, quality suffers, etc.

Usually those circumstances are due to government interference.

Much, if not most,

Much, if not most, "government interference" is regulation that was promoted by lobbyists in order to tilt the market in their clients' favor.
